Hello

Time has flown since our Dinner of the Year in March: we’re organising more events in Liverpool, Chester and Manchester at the moment, and have got a busy summer ahead…

We’ve been getting lots of queries about Winning Women expanding into other towns and cities lately, and to be honest, there’s only so much we can do at the moment. So… we thought that if you were interested in setting up a branch of Winning Women, we’d help you take it on.

You’ll get all the benefits of Winning Women’s big annual events, you’ll be able to use our merchandise and promotional materials and newsletters, and you’ll get support from a member of our team in head office, but you’ll be responsible for organising networking and social events in your area...
If that sounds right up your street and would like to know more please email me at esther@winningwomen.co.uk

Best wishes

Female bosses make for happy workers

We always knew it, but now it’s official… The happiest workplaces are those where two thirds of senior managers are women. Research for the Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For shows that employees are more satisfied with their managers, personal growth and colleagues where women make up more than 60% of the senior management. More than 86,000 employees across the country were canvassed, rating their companies in eight areas, including leadership, wellbeing, managers, pay and benefits, personal growth and social responsibility. Why tough girls have boys

Baby boys may be more likely to be born to tough, confident women, new research suggests. Eggs from female mammals were shown to have varying levels of testosterone – while those with the highest levels were more likely to develop into male embryos.
Valerie Grant, a behavioural scientist at Auckland University, is author of the study. Her research – based on cows – challenges the view that a baby’s sex is determined by chance, suggesting that a female mammal’s testosterone level might predispose her eggs to accept ‘male’ sperm. Does it ring true for you, or sound like a load of old rubbish? Read more on our website, here.

Women’s task force means business

Gordon Brown announced the creation of a new Task Force on Women’s Enterprise in his pre-budget report in December. From this month, the Task Force will swing in to action: the full make-up of the exercise is yet to be determined, but we do know that aims include making each Regional Enterprise Strategy include a plan to increase women’s enterprise rates, and that each Regional Development Agency will develop a strategy for incorporating its women-friendly business support into the mainstream.

At present, women own 15% of UK businesses – a figure that the government wants to increase to at least 30%. Although female-owned businesses account for £130 billion of turnover, women remain half as likely as men to start their own company. In the US, just 1.5 million women were in business when the US National Women’s Business Council was set up in 1988. Twenty years later, there were 20 million.
