Hi….

Where has the year gone? We’ve passed the longest day and are practically half way through now, so we thought it was time to take stock of 2006; see what our aims were at the start of the year, and see how far we’ve still got to go to achieve them.

Some of the things we’ve started are ticking along nicely, some we’ve still got some work to do on, and some have changed completely in the process! Sometimes doing a bit of market testing, chatting to some trusted advisors and cracking on with a project can really change its focus, but flexibility is the key, and luckily – as women – we’re pretty good at it.

If you are looking for some advice or guidance, we’ve got plenty of events over the summer months, plus our conference calling and business training. Email for more information on finance and setting up your business in our next conference call on Saturday Sept 16th, or if there are other areas of your business you need some advice on…

Best Wishes,

Progress check

Given that it’s nearly the end of June now, we thought it was the perfect time to check on your New Year’s Resolutions… It’s six months since we gave you our Winning Women prompt to record your aims and aspirations for the year on (and told you how important it was to actually commit them to paper). If you haven’t got your list in front of your computer – waiting to spur you on every morning – dig it out now, and see how many of those aims you’ve achieved, or taken the first steps to achieving. If you haven’t done as much as you’d hoped for, what are you going to do about it? What changes do you need to make?

And if you didn’t start the ball rolling in January, click here and download our resolution prompt.

You’ll be amazed how much you can achieve in six months…

Best foot forward…

It’s one thing looking the part, walking the walk and talking the talk when things are going swimmingly, but what about when you hit a rough patch? There’s been a string of stories in the press recently about women in the public eye, from Kate Moss to Sienna Miller, all of whom come under intense public scrutiny when they hit the headlines. But instead of curling up under your duvet and hiding from the world, life coach Pete Cohen gave Red Magazine these six top pick-up tips:

1. Invest in close relationships
Don’t be afraid to ask friends and family for perspective and practical help
2. Exercise
Even a gentle stroll boosts mood-enhancing endorphins
3. Rest is important
If you can’t sleep, write down what’s worrying you. Don’t allow your thoughts to go in a downward spiral; say ‘stop’ to yourself

4. Immerse yourself in the moment
Watch a film, put on your favourite music, do whatever makes you happy…
5. Redefine your goals
Think less about the problem, more about the future. Think about all the things you can do today, and work on accepting the things you can’t change
6. Stick to your usual routine
A bit of normality can help stop you feeling that your life is falling apart

Events round-up

We’ve had another busy month for Winning Women members, with 100 attendees at the networking night at the Pan American bar in late May catching the attention of Space magazine and the Daily Post. We gathered at the bar in Liverpool’s Albert Dock for a sumptuous evening of champagne and strawberries in chocolate. Delicious… And Lancashire Life & Style magazine covered our get together in Bollicini’s in Chester last week; guest speaker Penny Fray talked us through her top PR tips, and getting your company into the media

There’s plenty coming up over the summer too, so make sure you check the Winning Women website for the latest news on events and invitations.

Optimise your office

Whether you’re creating your perfect office in your house, or taking on premises, your office is somewhere you’re bound to put in the hours...
Follow these tips to make it as comfy as possible:

Plants and pictures
It’s not just a question of making the place look pretty: what about having a photo of your dream house, or idyllic holiday to inspire you when you need a hand? Plants also help to soak up gases emitted by your computer and furniture – NASA has even said that they may be a natural way of combating ‘sick building syndrome’.
Desk & Chair
Make sure your chair swivels, to avoid you stretching round and injuring your back, and has an adjustable seat, back rest and arms. Sit with your knees lower than your hips, and make sure you’re at least 25cm away from your computer screen to avoid eye strain.

Phone
Think about the positioning of your phone: does anyone other than you need access to it? And try to avoid wedging the phone between your chin and shoulder to you can type at the same time… Psychologists say that making a difficult call is easier when you’re standing up rather than sitting down. Think of costs too… Check out systems like Skype, and the new internet phone package from Tesco.

Don’t forget, if you want professional office accommodation to make an impression with your business, the Seymour Terrace Serviced Offices offer flexible office space and a boardroom for hire for important meetings. Click here for more information.
