Hello

Time seems to have flown since our first Winning Women email, but thanks to everyone who’s given us feedback and encouragement about it.

As always in the run-up to Christmas, things are getting hectic — we had our latest champagne and canapes networking night at Mosquito — you can see the photos here — and we’ve got our Christmas Cabaret next week, with celeb entertainer Fay Presto. If you haven’t booked your place yet, you can do so by clicking here.

Once again, enjoy the newsletter, enjoy Winning Women, and have a very Merry Christmas…

The truth hurts (when lying can be useful)

When was the last time you lied? A new Gallup poll suggests we each utter — on average — about 20 untruths a day. But what do you lie about? Britons are way ahead of the continentals when it comes to claiming we never received an email: 11%, compared to Spain on 4% and France & Italy on 3%. Other commercial lies include lying when chasing and paying invoices, and negotiating deadlines and deliveries.

But it’s not all bad: men tend to lie to make themselves look good, while women lie to make other people feel better; and we’re as good at lying to ourselves as we are to other people. But why? Well, lying helps us fit into society, but gives us a chance to look out for ourselves too — and beware of the ‘truth bias’: if you lead a busy life, you’re more likely to accept something as truth unless you have a specific reason not to. Take the time to discover the truth, and don’t just believe something because it’s quicker to take their word as gospel. You have been warned!
